The essentials
Do I need to declare income earned through Pet Chéri?
As a general rule, payments received for services provided in a professional capacity must be declared in accordance with the provider’s legal status and tax regime.
This may include dog walking, pet sitting and home visits, pet transport, grooming, dog training and animal well-being services.
The rules sometimes mentioned for occasional sales of personal belongings between individuals do not provide a general exemption for professional services. There is no general threshold of €2,000 or 30 services that, by itself, exempts you from declaring this income.
Your professional framework
Which legal status should you choose?
Every provider must operate within a legal, tax and social security framework appropriate to the way their business actually operates.
Micro-entrepreneur
A simplified French regime requiring periodic turnover declarations and payment of the corresponding social security contributions.
Sole trader
A business operated in your own name, with tax, social security and accounting obligations depending on the regime chosen.
Company
SASU, EURL, SAS, SARL… A structure with its own accounting, tax and social security obligations.
Other circumstances
If your circumstances do not match these examples, check the appropriate framework with a professional before providing services.
The appropriate status depends in particular on the nature and frequency of your services, how your business is organised and your personal circumstances. Contact URSSAF or a qualified accountant for guidance.
Tax and social protection
What are your obligations?
Declaring income
You must declare business income under the rules corresponding to your legal status and tax regime. The applicable tax category, notably BIC or BNC under French law, depends on the actual nature of the activity.
Social security declarations
Depending on your status, you may have to declare your turnover or income to URSSAF and pay the corresponding social security contributions and levies. Procedures and deadlines vary by regime.
VAT and CFE
Specific rules may apply to VAT, the VAT exemption regime and the French business property contribution (CFE). These depend in particular on your activity, turnover and circumstances.
Pet Chéri does not determine your personal tax regime. If you are unsure about the amounts to declare, expenses, VAT or contributions, seek advice from your accountant or the relevant authority.
Tax identification
Why might Pet Chéri ask for your tax identification number?
Under the tax transparency obligations applicable to certain digital platforms, notably the European DAC7 rules and their implementation in French law, Pet Chéri may be required to collect and verify certain information about the providers concerned.
Where required by law, this may include your tax identification number (TIN, or NIF in French), as well as information to verify your identity and tax residence.
What information may be requested?
- First and last name, or company name;
- Residential or registered office address;
- Country of tax residence;
- Tax identification number (TIN), where required;
- SIREN or SIRET number, depending on your circumstances;
- Other information needed for identification and verification under the applicable legislation.
Where necessary for the platform to comply with applicable legal obligations, collecting this information is based on a regulatory obligation. It is not an arbitrary request from Pet Chéri. However, the data requested must be relevant and limited to what is necessary.
What happens if I do not provide the required information?
DAC7 provides for specific measures when a reportable seller or provider fails to supply the required information after the prescribed reminders. Depending on the circumstances and applicable legislation, this may include restricting access to the platform or withholding payments. Pet Chéri will inform you of the steps to take and the consequences applicable to your situation.
The information collected is processed in accordance with personal data protection rules. For details of the purposes, legal basis, recipients, retention periods and your rights, please read Pet Chéri’s privacy policy or contact our team.
Platform transparency
What is DAC7?
DAC7 is European legislation requiring digital platforms within its scope to collect, verify and report certain information about reportable sellers and service providers to the tax authorities.
Personal services may fall within the scope of DAC7. Its actual application depends on the platform’s role, the nature of the transactions and the criteria set out in the legislation.
Depending on the applicable rules, reported information may include the provider’s identity and tax identifier, amounts paid or credited, and any fees, commissions or taxes withheld or charged by the platform.
Reporting information under DAC7 does not, by itself, create a new tax and does not replace your own tax and social security declarations.
Your annual statement
Where DAC7 applies, the reported information must also be communicated to the provider concerned. This statement helps you check your transactions; it is not a tax return and does not replace your accounting records.
Animal-related regulations
Obligations specific to your profession
In addition to tax and social security obligations, certain animal-related activities are subject to specific rules. Depending on the service you provide, you may need:
- an animal care knowledge certificate (ACACED) or a recognised equivalent qualification, where required;
- the administrative declarations or authorisations applicable to your activity;
- appropriate professional liability insurance;
- the skills, supporting documents and facilities needed to safeguard animal welfare and safety.
Requirements vary according to the exact nature of the activity. Each professional is responsible for checking the rules that apply to them.
How we work
What is Pet Chéri’s role?
Pet Chéri connects clients with pet care professionals and facilitates the organisation and monitoring of services under the terms set out in the applicable contractual documents.
Each provider remains responsible for their professional, tax, social security and administrative obligations, within the limits of their legal status and the contractual relationship in place.
Pet Chéri does not file providers’ personal tax returns and does not act in place of their accountant, URSSAF or the tax authorities.
Regulatory developments
Upcoming changes
The rules applicable to digital platforms and self-employed workers may change. French arrangements for certain platforms to collect and remit social security contributions have, in particular, been the subject of legislation and implementation schedules.
The procedures and effective dates must be checked against current legislation and the circumstances of each platform and provider. Pet Chéri will communicate confirmed information to the providers concerned when it directly affects how the platform operates.
Frequently asked questions
Your questions, answered.
I work with Pet Chéri alongside my main job. Do I need to declare this income?
As a general rule, yes. Earning income from a secondary activity does not exempt you from declaring professional income. The applicable regime depends on your circumstances.
Is there an income threshold below which I do not have to declare anything?
There is no general threshold that automatically exempts professional services from reporting obligations. Certain tax or social security rules may depend on specific thresholds, but these should not be confused with a general exemption from declaring income.
Why are you asking for my tax identification number?
Where Pet Chéri falls within the scope of DAC7 obligations, the tax identification number is part of the tax identification information to be collected and verified for reportable providers, in accordance with the applicable legislation.
Does Pet Chéri declare my income for me?
No. Any regulatory reporting carried out by the platform does not replace your own tax or social security declarations.
Do I need a SIRET number?
Registration formalities are generally required to carry out a professional self-employed activity. Check the procedures relevant to your circumstances and activity.
Do I need professional insurance?
Appropriate insurance is strongly recommended and may be mandatory depending on the activity, applicable legislation and your contractual commitments.
Who should I contact with a tax or social security question?
You can contact your accountant, URSSAF or the tax authorities. For questions about your services or the information requested by Pet Chéri, please contact our team.
