The car remains the most comfortable mode of transport for most dogs. In France, animals must be properly secured: transport crate, partition net or approved harness are required.
Plan a stop every two hours for your dog to stretch, hydrate and relieve himself. Give a light meal two to three hours before departure to reduce the risk of travel sickness.
Never: leave your dog alone in the car in direct sunlight — even 10 minutes can be fatal.

Small dogs (generally under 6–8 kg including carrier) can travel in the cabin in an approved bag under the seat. Larger dogs travel in the hold.
The hold is a stressful experience for most dogs: darkness, noise, temperature fluctuations. Brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs…) and anxious dogs require particular attention. Sedatives are not recommended without veterinary advice.

SNCF accepts dogs under 6 kg in a closed bag (flat fee) or larger dogs on a lead with muzzle at half the passenger fare. Rules vary across European rail companies.
